Who is eligible?

Graduates with a strong first degree, normally completed no more than six years before applying. Requirements differ sharply between the development-related postgraduate courses, the research grants and the subject-specific programmes, so eligibility must be read on the individual scholarship entry.

What the award covers

  • Monthly scholarship instalment
  • Travel allowance
  • Health, accident and liability insurance
  • Study and research allowance depending on programme

Amounts are revised by the awarding body each cycle. Treat this as the shape of the award, not a quotation.

Documents you will need

  • DAAD application form
  • CV in European format
  • Motivation letter
  • Transcripts
  • Language certificate (German or English as required)

Worth knowing before you apply

DAAD is a funding database rather than one scholarship. Search the database for your subject and level before applying — each entry has its own deadline.

Covering what the scholarship does not

A partial award reduces the bill rather than removing it. Work out the remaining figure first, then decide how to fund it — that is the number a lender assesses, not the headline fee.
